What I learned from using all three options: MiCom, Zoom and Boss is, it's really your preference.

Yep.  Most (if not all) our Kylo's in our Garrison (except me) use the MiCom.  I have thought about getting one for the times I don't want to talk, but not really high on my list right now.  But I like that it is an option!

I am definitely loving the Zoom.  The Boss, I felt like I got about 90% of the way to where I wanted to be, where the Zoom got me all the way there.  I am very happy with my setup right now.  Well, except that when I went on my last troop, my speaker decided to wig out RIGHT BEFORE leaving the changing area, but not much I can do at that point...  I actually use the same bag/system that I used with my Boss setup, so I got lucky there!  It's just lighter now!  LOL!

If you ultimately decide to go with a voice modulator, I'd suggest looking into the Zoom Multistomp as well. The Zoom is cheaper with more features than the Boss-VE5. But the configuration learning curve is steep and its bulky, making it harder to hide.

Agreed.  I had the Boss and have moved to the MultiStomp and it just has more effects/adjustment and is cheaper and smaller than the Boss.  I haven't found a downside to it yet.

I think the MiCom is great for people that don't want to talk or think/know they wouldn't be able to get the voice modulator dialed in good enough.  Personally, I like being able to talk and make each interaction/conversation unique.  I definitely have a lot of fun with mine!  But both are solid choices depending on how you want to approach it.

  3. Interesting idea.  That should work really well for SKB and Supreme Leader versions!

I just tried a new way for mine a couple weeks ago and it was "mostly" a success...  I have my Zoom in a bag hanging off my pants belt loops in back (like I have been doing) but placed the speaker off the BACK of my surcoat (under the scarf/hood area).  This does two things.  1) Allows me to crank the speaker (I have it at whatever the equivalant of Full Sound is) and has no feedback and 2) keeps my front scarf all nice and smooth.  Before, when I had the speaker up front, I couldn't turn it up very loud since it would start feedback after about 5 presses of my speaker.  Now, I press it till it is at full volume and is quite loud and intimidating!  The bad news, I was at an outside Carnaval troop, which was VERY crowded and it would pick up people/kids that were close to me.  Not too bad, and only ever once in a while, but I could notice when it did.  I am sure I can compensate with the Zoom in the settings (set my pickup lower), but I think at a "normal" troop that isn't super crowded, it should be fine...  Might have to make a "crowded" profile and a "normal" profile.

Still need more testing, but right now, I am loving my new setup.  And the kids/people at the event loved it as well (which is really the important part)!

    Greetings.

Thank you so much for sharing the setup for making a Kylo Ren Voice Changer.

I cannot the DynamicDrive or the CentaGold as options on my Zoom Multistomp MS-50G pedal.
I am located in Norway, and don't know if there's a difference between pedals sold in USA compare to Europe?

You have a picture I can see how the "Pedals" look like?

I am also working on a mandalorian character. Is there a setup for "Boba Fett" as well by using the same pedal?

    Thanks in advance.

    DS-25028

Be sure to have the firmware updated and also download the Effects Manager, both from the Zoom website.  The Effects Manager allows more effects to be loaded onto the MultiStomp.  I believe both of those effects are in the Effects Manager and not pre-loaded on the MultiStomp.

I have the MS-50G (mine looks just like the one in this link), which the files for this version are here:  https://zoomcorp.com/en/us/multi-effects/multistomp-pedals/ms-50g/ms-50g-support/

If you have a different version, I am sure you should be able to find the files on that site.  Not sure if the files are for all regions, but it's a good place to start.

    What mic?

I am using my old Radio Shack mic we all got many years ago. It works great.

I tried plugging an Aker mic into the exact same settings, uncontrolled feedback. Screeching.

So not only do you have to mix for your own voice, you have to mix for your mic and speaker.

In other words, the only time patches will give pretty much the same output, is when two people are using the same hardware.

Which Mic are you wanting to know.  I mentioned the XLR one that I am using, which is a Audio-Technica Pro8.  The other mics I tried were all small mics I have that I have used with various costumes, all of which sound good with their sound systems, but with my Stomp setup, sounded awful compared to the XLR I have.  One of the bonuses to the XLR, no condenser is needed.

I definitely agree, you have to mix for the mic, which is why I brought that up (and why it matters so much).  You can't just take someone's settings and plug them into your setup and expect the same results, unless you have the exact same setup (which is why I posted a pic after my first video of what exactly I have).  And even then, voices will be different.

I also fully promote playing around with the settings.  Heck, even start from scratch!  There are SO many options on this thing that there are probably half a dozen ways to get the same or similar sound/effects out of this setup!

  6. Finally got to do a video with my V2 setup.  I had to do it with my camera, which does not have a very good video option, cause my phone kept picking up weird echo-y things, but the sound part is pretty close to what it should be with this.

I'm about 90-95% happy with this one.  Some things to note.  Obviously, each persons voice is different, so dialing in these settings for other people is not easy!  2) Mic's matter!  I finally got my condenser with mic (that I found on the Vader's voice thread) and tried that option and it sounded awful!  I am currently using (have been using the whole time) a XLR mic (Audio-Technica Pro8) that I was using with my Boss setup and it is way better than any of the other smaller mics I tried.  I will probably create a new post that compares what I was using with my Boss system and the new MultiStomp at some point...  It's not technically a night and day difference, but this Zoom setup is definitely WAY better, IMO...

Here's the new video.  Settings below.

    Settings:

    ZNR: 15, IN, 100

    DynamicDrive: 68, 60, 62, Stack

    PitchSHFT: -3, 10, 88, 7, 110

    GraphicEQ: 8, 2, 2, 5, 7, 7, 140

    Z Clean: 52, 80, 105

    Booster: 15, 88, 100

At this point, I am done playing with it for now.  I need to actually do a full suit up and try it out at a troop before I play with the settings any further...

    I’ll give that a shot.

    It’s wonderful that the Zoom

has so many spots to save patches. Input the patch, test it out, tweak it. Then use it or not. Compare directly with other patches.

Those settings are right to left with the ZNR first? Thanks.

    Yep

Also, I don’t seem to have dynamicDrive on mine. MS-50.

    Darn.

I have the MS-50 as well.  There are a bunch of extra downloadable effects!  You can find them on their website with the latest firmware.

Okay, I messed around with icenyght’s settings and, serious, for my Zoom/Everplay setup, this is the closest I’ve been. Loud, no feedback. Sounds awesome. Bravo!

Here are my adjusted settings as I couldn’t find the DynamicDrive he had. So I put in a light overdrive in that spot.

I’ve finally found a Kylo patch I really, REALLY like. Great job iceknyght!

    ZNR: 18, in, 115

    Overdrive: 22, 50, 100

    PitchSHFT: -3,10,100

    GraphicEQ, 8,-2,4,8,8,8,150

    ZClean: 60,72,118

    Booster: 15,58,100

For extra volume, you can always adjust each patch louder. But too much won’t sound great. Hook it up and get it as loud as you feel you want to without feedback.

I hope to do a full suitup/voice test on Friday and hope to put up a video using this patch.

I’ll put up a video soon. Excited. :)

Nice!  Hopefully I’ll do my new video on Thursday or Friday…. Today and tomorrow was/will be busy!

  8. I didn't post the settings, since I was not 100% done.  I am still tweaking the sound to get it better...  I have since made a newer version that I think is better (it has a deeper sound)!  I need to do a new video of that one anyway (and yes, the sound was definitely bouncing off the walls!)

    These are my V1 settings:

    ZNR: 16, IN, 100

    DynamicDrive: 22, 50, 42, Stack

    PitchSHFT: -2, 10, 100, 7, 145

    GraphicEQ: 8, -2, 4, 8, 8, 8, 140

    Z Clean: 60, 72, 118

    Booster: 15, 58, 100

It's really hard to use other people's settings, since everyone's voices are different.  But it's definitely a good place to start...

  9. I just got the Stomp myself (been using the Boss system for the last few years) and am really digging it.  With the Boss, I could get my voice low, but clarity was always an issue and while there are quite a few effects, I still couldn't dial it in perfectly.

With the Stomp, there are TONS of options and even more to download!  And after starting with the settings above, I liked how it sounded better than my Boss pretty quickly.  I tweaked them for me, and liked it even better.  Then I made a V2 and am really digging it even more.  I am still tweaking things a bit (and I made this quick video in my hallway, so there is some echo-y-ness to it that's not there in real life), but I really like how this is right now:

I'm excited to play with this some more.  And for those interested in my setup, here's what I use:

  10. I bought a used one on Bay a few years ago, right when people started using them for Kylo, so I got lucky, but even used, it wasn't a ton of money off from new.

One thing on settings, it's really going to depend on your own voice.  I tried a few of the settings people posted and my settings now are pretty different.  Plus, I play with it every time I go on a troop, just to try and dial it in more.  Part of my problem is that it's hard to hear yourself with the helmet on, so getting a "true" sound takes some trial and error.  There are so many factors!  Helmet on, speaker under the scarf, neck seal (mine is on the tight side, so it alters my voice a little) and my voice seems to "burn out" as the troop goes on, which makes it harder to understand me (which is one of the reasons that even though I have the voice system, I don't actually talk much).  All these make it real difficult to make adjustments, but each time, I feel like I get a little closer.

Also, someone on the Knights of Ren page posted adding a headphone amp w/ equalizer to the mix (which makes the whole thing even bigger, but still manageable) and it really does a nice job of getting that deep, low sound out of the system.  I'll have to post a video of it with that attached.
