Does with only a jack plug always require a condenser? Only XLR ones don't?

Correct, a XLR plug receives its power through the three prong connection.  A regular jack would still require secondary power like a condenser.

This is the microphone I have been considering trying.

I’m certainly not an expert with electronics, but noticed the mic you linked had a female XLR plug.  When I was searching I found a lot more female plugs than the male type needed for the Boss input. Just thought I’d mention it, perhaps you’re aware and have a workaround plan.

Ok. Can you show me how that works? Does the plastic come off the port?

The mic in on the Boss stays exactly as it is out of the box.  There is a groove that guides the pins of mic in to the right place as you push it in.

Is that not the case with an unpowered XLR headset mic? It sure would make it simpler.

You do not need any secondary power amp for the XLR mic. As I understand it, the pins on the insert pull the “phantom” power needed from the Boss (probably didn’t say that in any correct tech terminology)

I’d like to get rid of the mic amp. Just one less failure point to worry about.

Is there a cheap XLR mic I can plug into the Boss? I bought a couple of items from Amazon. If they don’t work I’ll return them

Perhaps an adapter to go from your 1/4 or 1/8 mic to XLR?  I am unsure if that would work like the true XLR mics

When I was searching for XLR mics I found them to range from around $60 to hundreds.  I assume a higher quality than the cheap 3.5 mics, as they are generally used by musicians/singers.  I did have a harder time finding the mic with “male” XLR, most seemed to be “female” ends.

Im really liking not needing a mic amp or separate amp for the speakers, if I can finish the JBL speaker set up.

Is the IN on the BOSS a mini-XLR? And will it work unpowered, so no mic amp? I must admit I’ve never seen that IN port before. And it does work with 1/4”.

The “mic in” is the regular XLR port (not a mini) which is powered through the Boss, no other amp needed.  Mic end looks like this.

There is only one other “aux in” that is a 1/8 (3.5mm) jack.  It bypasses all the Boss settings (all voice modulation), so I use it for the breathing loop.

Quick question, what input does this take? The “mic in” is something I’ve never seen before. The OP used an XLR mic so I assumed XLR in, but it doesn’t look like XLR?

    Thanks.

The mic port on the boss is a female XLR which is what the headset plugs in. There is a male XLR out as well, I’ve never used that. I have only used the 3.5 “line out” to speakers.

this is the mic headset I use https://www.samash.com/shure-wh20xlr-headset-microphone-with-xlr-connector-swh20xlr?gclid=CjwKCAjwkY2qBhBDEiwAoQXK5eWAhNVd7SZkEIIqaIISeIB-POJgrsewcbjeTRkSIz6leQb7mzNKdRoC47kQAvD_BwE

Matt: Thanks SO much for that test. I really appreciate it. (Also fun to see the man behind the mask.)

So, the Boss unit controls the volume output of the microphone/modulated signal. But, there is no separate volume control for the AUX input—and that signal is just passed through and patched into the outbound sound signal, correct? The Boss manual states that for the AUX-in: "Use the controls of the connected device (audio player) to adjust the volume." So, that should work for balancing the breathing sound from an MP3 player with volume control. Does that make sense? A few other questions:

    • It's not stated in the manual, but I assume the unit will play both voice modulation and AUX signals at the same time. Can you confirm?
    • Which "out" port are you using to connect to your speakers (headphones, or line?)
    • What connector does that port use? (XLR plug or stereo 3.5mm mini-plug?)

Note: I also saw that there is a microphone sensitivity adjustment, so that could help with eliminating ambient noise.

Doug, I’m still tweaking my Boss set up for Vader, but I have tested the aux in using an MP3 Breathing Loop. It does bypass the voice modulation, and the volume is controlled by the MP3 player as you predicted. It allows for a good balance between voice and breathing and both work at the same time. I’ve used a 3.5 line out to the speakers (JBL GO2). I’m looking to test the speakers in the bells of the armor just as you’ve been working on.
