Troop went great, sound was superb and my setup worked perfectly.  The speaker was directly under my chin under the front of the cowl and the voice changer box hung off the hook under the back of my cowl.  There is plenty of fabric to cover both pieces and not look bulky...highly recommend!

Oh man, I wasn't getting any notifications that you've been posting ....my bad!

So happy to see it worked out.  You see now what I mean about "getting it dialed in?"

It SUCKS before you can get it right, but after you find that sweetspot it's awesome.

As for placement and whatnot, I found that right above my lower back, (above where the top of the belt sits) is a good place for it.  I have it velcroed onto my inner tunic, with the wires running around my side and through the arm hole, with the other just coming up through the neck line.  The speaker is simply on a strap which velrcos around my neck and sits under my cowl.  Super simple, nothing fancy.

But whatever works for your needs is good enough, right?

Happy it worked out for ya!

  2. As promised, I'd be posting my findings as I navigate along the way with this new unit.

Gonna toss my previous post upside down with this one....

Realizing that the knob on the unit itself is merely a "volume", and nothing more....I decided to switch the two levels between unit and speaker.

I now have the knob on the unit turned up 100%, and the speaker itself at 50%.  Big difference.   Cleaner, and there is no whistle and hum from the speaker, because it's not amplifying itself at a high level.  The Kylo sound is still however, due to the unit exporting the sound at 100%.

You still need to watch out for your hard consonants, it'll pop and crackle with certain letters, you literally almost want to whisper in your helmet when you say certain letters.  lol

...and as always, mic placement remains key!  That is the single most important part of this entire setup.

Just some updates on the new unit.

    Still love it.

But after trooping in it for the first time this weekend, there are definitely some things that you need to make sure about to ensure a clean sound.

First, that mic REALLY needs to be off to the side of your lip, and even an inch away.  Anything other than that and you'll have some issues with clarity.

Second, the master gain on the unit itself, the green knob, should not be turned up completely.  I find that pulling it back to about 80-90% is good, and then use the volume on the speaker to compensate.  The speaker too, should not be at max either.  I put that up to around 90% as well.

When the gain is up too high on the unit, it creates a way too sensitive mic, and we were at a wedding troop this weekend and the music was LOOOOUD, which was causing my mic and speaker to go nuts the entire time.  Ugh.  lol

When we were off to the side for photos as well, the room was so big and cavernous, with no rug, nothing on the walls, just that fancy ivory and tiles all over.  The room was bouncing the sound everywhere, and it was packed with people for photos.  Again, the gain being too high made it a mess.

Once suited up, you can't really get to that knob, so I had to make do.  All in all, it was "fine" I suppose, but no where near how awesome the new unit could have performed.

    So in conclusion:

    Gain - 80-90% up

    Speaker 90% up

Mic - off to the side, and even out an inch or so.  No exceptions.

Lastly, I had to tweak the setup of the unit again.  When in hand, you'll see what I mean about that button that changes the sounds, it's just too easy to hit by accident.

So I took a cap to a small plastic jar I had, and drilled a hole through it, and hot glued it to the box.  Now, you have to go out of your way to stick your finger in it to change the sounds.  No way of possibly hitting it by accident.

(please excuse the messy look....I also hot glued the unit into the box too, to keep it in place)

    Super helpful review...thank you!

I will be reviewing mine when it comes in and we can do a comparison.  Also...super helpful post about the setup you have.  I've been contemplating where I am going to store this thing myself...I was thinking of somehow hanging it on my upper back under the cowl, then running the cord in to my bucket (for the mic) and back into my costume for the speaker.

Will see if I can post pics when the time comes.

    Thx again!

    Chris

I think you have the right idea!

With Kylo, the options are quite limited and few when it comes to running electronics.

That said, the huge cowl hides a ton.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

If you need more photos of exactly how I have it set up, I'll be happy to provide.

I just bought the last one.  I'm hoping its as good as the video $200 with shipping.

    I sure did!

I paid $179 for the deluxe kit that comes with the speaker and the mic.  With shipping it was $200 even.

So I'll cut and paste what I wrote about it in another thread below, but I want to add....because I can't stress this enough:

    I HATED it at first.

I was almost laughing at how bad it was.

Then I took the time to really dial things in, as Ray (the man who created it, and who is awesome btw) told me to do.  First thing was mic placement.  It REALLY needs to be touching the corner of your lip, no exceptions.  The moment you talk "into" it, it sounds terrible.  Once you place it correctly, even if you think it won't work in that placement, the entire kit sounds AMAZING.

    Super clear too.

    Here's my original post:

    -----------------------

Wow! Mine arrived this weekend....I gotta say I'm in love with it!!!

It most definitely took a lot of troubleshooting to get it even to a point of "working", but once I did I really is an amazing (and priced just right) voice changer.

    Some definite tips:

The mic needs to be off to the side of your mouth, and not directly over it.

You need to speak at an absolute norm volume, if not, even lower.  The unit can become overwhelmed quickly and give a less than desirable fx.

When operated correctly it is an absolutely amazing set up.

A quick demo: (toggle sound on)

    iDrj3VBm.mp4

I will say however, and I mentioned this to Ray, the guy who made it.

The placement of the battery and the voice toggle switches make for a challenging "how to wear this" when considering the costume of Kylo.

The batter makes it thicker than needed, as opposed if it was just on the side of the box instead....and the toggle switches make it challenging to not hit when wearing it.

In the end, I made a compartment carrier from a dollar store container, and cut some holes for some of the access points.  The box itself helps from things getting pressed by accident.

I merely velcroed it to by inner pleated coat with above my lower back, and when the outer coat and belt go on, it helps hold it up and in place (along with the velcro)

The cowl completely covers any bulge it might cause.

  6. Anyone know about this HelicalHypercom voicechanger?  I haven't been able to dig up much info on it; but that price is right for sure!
